Discover the Magic of Contrast Toys for Babies

Webshop owner and mother
As the proud owner of a motor toys webshop, I have been fascinated for many years by the impact of visual contrasts on the development of young children. Today exactly one month ago I became an aunt again, my sister had her first child. That little girl is just starting to respond to contrast pictures, what an "eye-opener". Today I would like to share my passion for contrast toys and their influence on babies' visual development.
Babies’ visual world is initially limited. At just one month old, they can’t see much except for strong visual contrasts like black and white. Fortunately, baby toy manufacturers have understood this well. In my almost 20 years as a baby webshop owner, I have seen the phases in which Contrast toys are popular with manufacturers, and currently the range on the market is enormous. In this blog post, you will discover why these toys are so essential for babies’ visual development.
Baby's Observation at 1 Month Old
Did you know that a one-month-old baby doesn't even look at your eyes? For them, sharp contrasts like your hairline are much more interesting. Contours slowly start to become visible, and the first glimmers of color begin to manifest themselves. Red and green are the colors they perceive first, while blue and yellow only come into play later. Blue seems almost 'blackish' to them at first. It takes a while before they really recognize that beautiful sea-blue wall in the nursery.
Toys Testing for Visual Contrasts
Want to know if toys are suitable for babies? A handy trick is to set your camera to black and white mode. This will allow you to quickly see if the pastel-colored toys are visually interesting for young children. Black-yellow and brown-yellow, like bees, are also excellent visual contrasts that will catch their attention.
A Picture is Enough
In the early stages of their development, a baby doesn’t need much. A simple picture can do wonders. Special cards and soft cloth books are perfect for this. Place them next to your child and alternate between right and left to encourage their head movement. You can also place your baby on your legs and move the picture from side to side for visual stimulation.
The daily stomach position can also be supported in this way.
Mobile Contrasts for the Little Ones
Wimmer Ferguson has developed special contrast mobiles that take into account how babies see them from below. This means that the images are placed parallel to the baby's lying surface, so that they can perceive them well. There are also mobiles that are designed from a parent's perspective, which sometimes produces hilarious results.
Discover the Philosophy of Wimmer-Ferguson
Wimmer-Ferguson has been a toy developer for over 30 years. They claim to be the original pioneer in research-based, high-contrast colors and graphics for infant visual development. The graphics and patterns on all Wimmer-Ferguson products reflect over 40 years of academic research and adapt to the changes in a baby's visual development through a variety of designs, complexity and color.
I strive to always have Wimmer-Ferguson material in my webshop. Sometimes the supply can be temporarily limited, but rest assured, new stock will be coming in soon. If you are looking for something specific, always let me know. I am happy to help you in your search for the perfect toy for your little one.
A New Dimension for Visually Impaired Children
For children with visual impairments, contrast toys can make a world of difference. The clear visual contrasts help them to better perceive and understand shapes, objects and details. These toys contribute to an enriched play experience and encourage their curiosity and exploration.
Light Reflection, Mirror Balls and Shadows
In addition to the classic contrast toys, there are other ways to stimulate the senses of babies and visually impaired children. Natural contrasts created by shadows are fascinating, for example. They immediately attract attention and create an engaging visual experience.
To enhance this effect, you can use simple tools such as a plastic diamond, a mirror or a disco ball that you hang by the window. When the sun's rays fall through the window, beautiful reflections and shadow play are created in the room. This is not only visually intriguing, but it also stimulates the imagination and creativity of children.
