Sensory materials help! Also in the Silence Houses……

Founder of the Silence Houses

Fidgets are incredibly popular among our children. They spin and pop away vigorously. We increasingly see that children like to be busy with multiple tasks at the same time, for example, being busy with a fidget and participating in the teacher's instruction. In the classroom, this is also often used as small interventions.

The Silence activities in the Silence House

In the Silence House, the fidgets and other sensory integration materials are part of the Silence activities. The range of Toys42Hands is therefore one big candy store for the filling of these Silence Boxes. In the Silence House, the children are allowed to do nothing and relax for a while. However, we often see that it is quite difficult to do nothing and just be there for a while.

That is why the Silence activities mentioned are offered in the Silence House. There is a choice of twelve different boxes, such as the fiddling box, the viewing box, the listening box, the smelling box and many more. The Silence activities all aim to distract the mind, to calm down & relax or to experience emotions. Here too, we see that it helps the children enormously to get away from a situation for a while. They fidget vigorously or sit and listen to relaxing music or stories.

After using the Silence House with the Silence activities, we see that children feel better again, are able to participate in the activities again and behave correctly socially. How nice is that, both for the child, the group and the teacher!

Objectives of the Silence Houses

The latter also forms the goals that are part of the total concept of the Silence Houses. Getting children back into their 'Window of Tolerance' - their neutral mode and on top of that developing a basic skill for self-care. Because how beautiful is it when a child knows himself in this way, knows what he needs to feel good and also knows how to respond to this. In connection with himself, the most powerful and most involved things arise.

The total concept of the Silence Houses

For all this, the total concept of the Silence Houses is committed with heart and soul. The total concept consists of five pillars to support the stated goals on all sides. These pillars consist of:

– Of course the beautiful and positive Silence House with supporting furnishings and only that functionality
– The Silence activities, as already described
– Lessons for children provide embedding and structure to the use of the Silence House and are a good starting point in raising awareness of self-care.
– A team workshop where all the ins and outs of the Silence House are discussed.
– Coaching of a Silence House Coordinator where guidance on goals takes place.

More and more schools (both regular and special education), after-school care and organisations with mentally and physically disabled children are using the Silence Houses. The children are so fortunate that if things don't go as planned, they are not punished but can be used to become aware and grow in the positive environment of the Silence House using the Silence activities. And what do the children themselves think? They love it in the Silence House!
